How to prevent authoritarianism and how the elective democracy can prevent authoritarian leaders from power, and how elections can be organized after an armed conflict and protect voter rights – the aspects were tackled in a discussion on “Ensuring Sustainability of Democracy Through Elections: Prospects and Challenges,” a part of the “Democracy in Action” conference.

On June, 7-8, the Democracy in Action conference took place. During the discussion on “Ensuring Sustainable Democracy Through Elections: Prospects and Challenges” event participants discussed global solutions for the development of democracy and elections. On May, 20, a plenary session of the Grand Chamber of the Constitutional Court of Ukraine took place on the motion from 45 people’s deputies who qualified as unconstitutional the lack of majoritarian election system at parliamentary elections. On May 19, the CEC decided to implement the Resolution of the Grand Chamber of the Supreme Court of Ukraine to cancel its protocol on the results of the by-elections of the People's Deputy of Ukraine, and drew up a new protocol. The winner of the election was Vasyl Virastiuk ("Servant of the People" party), who received 14,811 votes. According to the new protocol, the candidate from the "For the Future" party, Oleksandr Shevchenko, won 13,942 votes.

Regulation of procedures of electoral campaigning and publicity is enshrined in the Electoral Code (adopted by the Verkhovna Rada of the 9 th convocation) mostly repeats the provisions of the electoral law adopted over 10 years before its approval, and does not comply with the current conditions of media activities.

On May, 11, 2021, the Sixth Administrative Court of Appeals held illegal and repealed the Resolution of the Central Election Commission on unfeasibility to have the first elections of local deputies in certain village, township, and city councils of Donetsk and Luhansk Oblasts and for respective village, township, and city heads on October, 25, 2020.

The Central Election Commission established the lack of legal grounds to register Vasyl Virastiuk as a people’s deputy for constituency No 87. It was discussed at the CEC session on May, 5, 2021.
