The conflict between claimants to TVi Channel possession negatively threatens its editing policy. During three-day confrontation between the new channel management and the labor collective, first signs of pressure were noticed, presenter Pavlo Sheremet was unexpectedly discharged, and journalists' right to form a labor union was ignored. 43 journalists have called a strike until the conflict is resolved and announced their demands. Journalists asserted violation of labor legislation and their rights, particularly obstruction to performing their professional duties, the cancellation of broadcasting on April 23, the prohibition of the new management to disseminate information about the conflict and invitation of certain guests to the studio.
Besides that, TVi audience was deprived of qualitative news and programs. Therefore, the rights of Ukrainian citizens for access to information, which have chosen this very channel to secure personal information needs, were violated.
Active part of society painfully takes restriction of freedom of speech and media conflicts. Ukraine's place in the freedom of speech rating, provided by the Freedom House, has lowered to number 130 during 2009 - 2011, what is 24 numbers lower than before. Despite the abovementioned, citizens, experts, politicians, and the audience should show their response to any pressure upon journalists.
Civil Network OPORA is concerned with the situation and ready to help striking journalists to protect their rights. The Network urges both businessmen to resolve the conflict in legal and civilized way, prevent dismissal of journalists and technical staff, as well as and management to stop all forms of censorship. Reported by labor collective attempts to illegally control informational product should be investigated and those guilty should be called to account. Besides that, OPORA is asking MPs and politicians to be tactful towards the TVi staff and don't go beyond their own status.
OPORA is a partner of the Dear Deputies TV program and urges the management to hold meaningful negotiation regarding demands of the labor collective. The Channel's authority should be preserved and the rights of audience and journalists should be protected.
